Efficiency is a measure of how much hair can be removed in a shaving stroke. While all razors can deliver a close shave with multiple passes, a higher efficiency rating indicates a razor that achieves a closer shave in the same number of passes.

Blade feel is a measure of how pronounced the blade is when contacting the skin. A high blade feel rating indicates that the blade will be very noticeable on the skin by the user during the shave while a low rating indicates that the blade is barely perceived by the user. Blade feel has pros and cons. Some users find that feeling the blade while shaving provides great feedback, instructing the user on exactly where the blade is and how much pressure is applied. Others may find that a lot of blade feel is irritating to the skin and uncomfortable. This rating is one of the most important when considering a new razor.

This is the only rating that can be objectively measured. We've converted each weight into a rating out of ten for simplicity. Lighter razors are more maneuverable and are typically a bit smoother because there is less force from gravity acting on the razor. They may suffer from being too light and can skip or tug on hair. Heavier razors plow through stubble, but users may find the extra pressure to be irritating.

Smoothness is a measure of how well the razor glides across the skin. Razors with a high smoothness rating are typically easier to use and are beginner friendly. High blade feel often reduces smoothness, but the connection is not a 1:1 ratio so we've split these ratings. For example, increasing blade feel rating by 1 does not necessarily decrease smoothness rating by 1.
